Tiger or Roger, Golf or Tennis? Which Performance Is More Dominant?

I'm going with Tiger in the Tiger Woods-Roger Federer debate.

And I'll take tennis in the tennis-golf debate.

Woods and Federer are lumped in the same discussion here because they share similar greatness, a friendship and, of course, the same agent, who keeps marketing them together, putting them in the same commercials, in the stands when the other guy is competing, and in congratulations messages when the other guy hits it big.

So Federer won his record 15th major Sunday at Wimbledon, beating Andy Roddick in a classic five-set match.

"Great job,'' Woods sent Federer in a text message. "Now it's my turn.''

Mary Mickelson, Phil's Mom, Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

A rough month for Phil Mickelson and his family just got a lot tougher when news hit that Phil's mother, Mary Mickelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer less than seven weeks after Amy Mickelson, Phil's wife, was told she had the same disease.

Tina Mickelson, Phil's sister, said on Monday that Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago and will go in for surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital Amy was being treated at last Wednesday.

Police Confirm Gun Belonged to Kazemi

Sahel KazemiNASHVILLE, Tenn.(AP) -- Police say the gun found at the scene where former NFL star Steve McNair died was bought by his girlfriend less than two days before the two were shot to death.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said Monday that 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi bought the semiautomatic handgun Thursday evening from a person he didn't name.

An autopsy showed that McNair and Kazemi died early Saturday. He was shot four times and his death has been ruled a homicide. She was shot once and Aaron said police are still waiting for ballistic and gunpowder residue tests before deciding if she was slain or committed suicide.

Umpire's Comment Has Jeter Stunned

Derek Jeter New York Yankees Scott Rolen Toronto Blue JaysNEW YORK – What could make Derek Jeter lose his cool?

We found out Monday.

After being caught stealing third base in the first inning of Monday's game at Yankee Stadium, Jeter yelled to umpire Marty Foster: "He didn't tag me."

According to Jeter, Foster replied, "He didn't have to tag you. The ball beat you."

That caused Jeter – who may debate a called strike on occasion but perhaps never before so visibly confronted an umpire – to turn around and tell Foster, "I was unaware of that rule change."

Jeff Fisher: The Steve McNair I Knew Would Want Me to Say 'Sorry'

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who coached Steve McNair for his first 11 seasons in the NFL, remembered the slain quarterback Monday as a loving husband and father and a good man both on and off the field. He also spoke for McNair, even apologizing on McNair's behalf and suggesting that McNair would want to say he's sorry for his relationship with Sahel Kazemi, the woman who allegedly killed him and killed herself.

Not Even Yankee Stadium Can Stop Blue Jays Rookie Ricky Romero

Toronto's Ricky Romero wobbled early against the Yankees but settled in to improve to 7-3 in his impressive rookie season.NEW YORK -- Yeah, he was nervous, he admitted with a shy smile. Ricky Romero was pitching against the Yankees, in front of more than 46,000 people on a perfect summer day in the Bronx. The Blue Jays' 24-year-old rookie left-hander was fired up and throwing way too hard, which is why he darn near Yahtzeed* the scorecard in the first inning.

"I was excited, I'm not going to lie," Romero said when the Jays' 7-6 victory was over and he'd improved to 5-1 with a 2.22 ERA in his last seven starts. "Packed house, pitching against the Yankees -- I was overthrowing. And that is something that has just not been me. Not this year, at least."

Not for the past month, for sure. In that time, Romero has been one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Ryan Braun Demands That the Brewers Make a Trade

Don't get nervous, Brewers fans, Ryan Braun isn't asking out of Milwaukee. Quite the opposite, actually. He's asking that general manager Doug Melvin try to pull off something like he did a year ago Tuesday when the Brewers landed CC Sabathia in a deal that helped propel them to the postseason for the first time since 1982.

The timing of Braun's request is understandable. The Brewers just dropped three of four games at Wrigley Field to the recently revived Cubs, and two of those games featured poor starts from Mike Burns and Seth McClung. Those aren't names you'll find starting games for too many playoff teams, something Braun would like the Brewers to be this season.

Tiger's Chance in Majors Increase When He Wins Two Weeks Before

It's one thing to be amazed by a singular feat of athleticism. It defines a moment, sometimes a career. But Tiger Woods amazes us with multiple feats of athleticism, often several times during a tournament, and it's almost as if his last unbelievable shot outshines all the unbelievable shots that preceded it.

It's a rare quality. So rare, in fact, that I can't think of anyone -- in any sport -- who comes close to matching his success. Woods is the favorite at every major championship, no matter the state of his game. That won't change in two weeks at the British Open. In fact, yesterday's result -- a win at the AT&T National -- bodes well for Tiger at Turnberry, historically speaking, anyhow.

Tribune Company Finally Reaches Deal To Sell the Cubs

Wrigley FieldWhat was supposed to happen by the end of May, er, in February, er, in December of 2008 -- you get the idea. The sale of the Chicago Cubs from Sam Zell's Tribune Company has been dragging along at a sloth-like pace for as long as anyone cares to remember. Judging by this past weekend, though, it appears the finishing touches of the sale are coming to fruition.

Zell's group has agreed to sell the Cubs to the Ricketts family -- who made their fortune through TD Ameritrade -- for what is reported to be close to $900 million. The only remaining steps are that the sale must be approved by the rest of the baseball owners and then by a court (because the Tribune Company is operating over Chapter 11 bankruptcy).

Steve McNair's Tragic End Shouldn't Tarnish His Legacy

Steve McNairWe tend to forget that there are human beings behind statistics -- the touchdowns, the passes, catches and tackles. The victories, mistakes and losses. Then Steve McNair, once a powerful, influential football player, but also a husband, father of four and a friend, was gunned down.

As the shock of his sudden death staggered friends and fans, the details quickly became muddled and disturbing. Why was McNair shot multiple times, including twice in the head? Who was the 20-year-old woman, found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head, lying near McNair's feet in the former quarterback's rented Nashville condominium?

The Tennessee Titans' signature player and a beloved figure in the Nashville community, gone at age 36.

Wanderlei Silva on Franklin Loss, Griffin vs. Anderson and Fedor in the UFC

Wanderlei Silva is one of the greatest fighters in the history of mixed martial arts, but after falling to Rich Franklin at UFC 99, he's lost five of his last six fights. Does that mean his fighting career is just about over?

Silva doesn't think so. When I talked to him over the weekend, he sounded excited about returning to the Octagon late this year, and about his work as a trainer and as an ambassador for MMA. He also refuted reports that he had a hard time making the 195-pound limit for the Franklin fight, offered a prediction on the upcoming Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva fight at UFC 101, and talked about whether his old friend from their days fighting in Japan, Fedor Emelianenko, will ever fight in the UFC. Silva's comments are below.

Mavericks Keep Jason Kidd, Continue to Defend Devin Harris Trade

One positive ramification of Jason Kidd ditching Dallas after 1-1/2 years in Maverick blue would have been that Mark Cuban and team management could finally have admitted that the Kidd-Devin Harris trade was an absolute mistake. But no, we're due ...

Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar Say They Don't Dislike Each Other
